Georgia Panel of Physicians: What You Must Post

If you operate in Georgia and have workers' compensation coverage, you're required to post a Panel of Physicians notice on your business premises. But what exactly goes on that notice? And what happens if you get it wrong? Here's what Georgia law requires.

The Minimum Panel Requirements

Georgia employers must maintain and post a panel of at least six physicians. That panel must include at least one orthopedic surgeon, no more than two industrial clinics, and each physician's name, address, phone number, and website.

These aren't optional details. Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 34-9-201) is clear: employers who fail to provide the required posting procedures lose all control over medical care. An injured employee can then select any physician at your expense.

The Minority Physician Rule

Georgia Board Rule 201 adds one more requirement: your panel must include at least one minority physician whenever feasible. "Minority" is defined as a group subjected to prejudice based on race, color, sex, handicap, or national origin, including Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans.

This doesn't mean your panel is invalid if you can't find one. But it's a requirement you should aim to meet.

FAQ

Q: Who has to post this notice? Every Georgia employer covered under workers' compensation law must post the Panel of Physicians notice in prominent places on business premises.

Q: What if we don't include all six physicians? Georgia law allows exceptions only if more than four physicians are not reasonably accessible. If you don't qualify for an exception and fail to post a valid panel, injured employees can choose any physician at your expense.

Q: Can we post this online instead of in the office? The law requires physical posting on your business premises. You can supplement with electronic posting (website or app), but the physical notice must stay.
